Unique sawmill with tools from LSAB

LSAB Suomi Oy has been selected as a strategic partner and supplier to Metsä Fiber’s new sawmill.

LSAB Finland is a long-term partner to Metsä Fiber’s sawmill and the agreement with Rauma sawmill is a continuation of this partnership.

LSAB Finland will provide the sawmill in Rauma with the saw blades needed and take care of the important re-grinding service. The company is committed to our common safety goals and we have been able to develop our business together. The collaboration with LSAB Finland has been going on for a long time and they deliver saw blades to all our sawmills, says Liisa-Maija Perävainio, Sawmill Manager at Metsä Fiber’s Rauma sawmill.

Metsä Fiber’s investment in a sawmill in Rauma amounts to approximately EUR 200 million and the annual production of the new unit is approximately 750,000 cubic meters of sawn timber. For example, the use of artificial intelligence at various stages of the sawmill process is a major innovation, and similar technologies are not yet used elsewhere in the sawmill industry. Construction of the sawmill is progressing as planned and production will start during the third quarter of 2022.

FACTS Metsä Fiber Rauma sawmill

The sawmill employs about 100 people directly in Finland and about 500 people in the entire value chain. The employment effect of the sawmill’s construction phase is estimated at approximately 1,500 man-years. The annual use of logs purchased in Finland at the sawmill is approximately 1.5 million cubic meters. The new timber production will mainly be sold to Europe and Asia. The location of the future sawmill is logistically excellent, as it enables efficient integration in the pulp mill and smooth logistics of sawn timber for customers through the port of Rauma. Synergies with pulp milling are used in energy production, utilization of sidestreams, logistics and services. The sawmill’s environmental impact is minimized and, for example, noise management has been taken into account from the design stage in both construction and equipment as well as machine selection.
